STORAGE TANKS

Innospection’s storage tank inspection package with the next generation MEC technique and integrity management as per EEMUA 159/API 653 standards is a cost effective solution with the benefit of a reliable and thorough inspection for peace of mind.

CASE STUDIES
CAPABILITIES

MEC (Magnetic Eddy Current) is the next generation and a further development of the industry proven fast corrosion screening SLOFEC™ technique. Innospection’s capabilities in tank floor inspection with the MEC technique are:

  • High sensitivity in detecting corrosion, pitting and local defects in tanks with

    • Plate thickness up to 30mm

    • Coating thickness up to 10mm

  • Ability to inspect lined and unlined carbon steel and stainless steel tanks

  • Ability to inspect the tank annulur plates

  • Ability to inspect overlapped welds in lined tanks

  • Direct sizing of defects during scanning without the need for Ultrasonic verification

  • Minimal surface preparation prior to inspection

  • High inspection speed of approx. 25m/min

  • Separate reporting for topside and underside defects

BENEFITS

MEC (Magnetic Eddy Current) is a dynamic electromagnetic technique that supports the Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) strategy and offers the following benefits:

  • High sensitivity and reliability in detecting topside and underside defects from including small and shallow pitting caused by bacterial corrosion (from Ø >3mm and 10% wall loss)

  • No coating removal or shot blasting of tank floor is required prior to inspection, resulting in a faster and more economical operation as well as a shorter time for the tank being out of service

  • Analysis of defect severity in terms of volume and wall loss

  • Direct sizing of defects during scanning without the need for Ultrasonic verification with accuracy of +/- 10% for onsite reporting and +/- 5% for special offline analysis

  • Direct sizing of defects during scanning without the need for Ultrasonic verification with accuracy of +/- 10% for onsite reporting and +/- 5% for special offline analysis

  • Differentiation of defects from non-defects such as inclusions and laminations

  • Enables fast and efficient scanning and C-scan mapping of large areas

  • Low cleaning requirement prior to inspection

EQUIPMENT

The MEC-Floorscanners are designed and built for the high speed and high performance inspection of storage tank floors. The TÜV certified MEC-F15 Floorscanner have the following features:

  • Ability to scan right up to the tank shell guided by the wheels with minimal dead zone on annular zone area and floor plate overlaps

  • Improved signal to noise ratio for enhanced defect detection level

  • Shorter wheel distance for reduced influence from undulating or uneven floor plates

  • Rapid magnet on/off operation for faster positioning and manoeuvring from track to track during scanning

  • Ability to change the scanning lift-off for inspecting surfaces that are not well-cleaned

Accurate, reliable and repeatable real time inspection results are provided in real time in the form of an extensive colour condition mapping report with analysis of detected defects in terms of size, wall loss severity and location. In addition, the corrosion C-Scan mapping, statistical analysis overview, individual defect listing and repair plate report are also provided.
